  • Why should customers hire you?

When you hire Normand Land Surveying, you are hiring a licensed professional with a diverse experience in the industry who is ready to get his boots dirty. During our initial phone consultation, I am assessing your project needs so that you are obtaining the products and services you need without overpaying for things you don't. I personally conduct all the field work for each project on site so nothing gets missed and time is not wasted on superfluous efforts. When the project is complete, I remain ready to answer your questions, explain my work, and offer any additional services without unnecessary duplication of effort.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I began surveying on Saturdays with a semi-retired surveyor and started my career as a survey tech at a small firm in Iberia Parish, Louisiana, while attending licensure classes. Once my coursework was complete, I moved to an oil and gas surveying and engineering firm and worked as a survey tech in the energy and production department. I earned my license in 2016 and started Normand Land Surveying. Since then, I have earned licenses in Texas and Oklahoma. When the time was right, I transitioned to operating Normand Land Surveying full-time and have been enjoying every minute of it.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a professional in your area of work?

Get a clear, full-size copy of your plat and/or legal description from the local clerk of court records. A land surveyor cannot work from an illegible plat nor can they work from an assessor's report alone. The assessor report is only helpful to the extent that it tells a land surveyor where to begin searching in the clerk of court records.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

In order to earn my license, I needed a bachelor's degree from a university with an accredited engineering school (Louisiana State University in my case); 30 hours of survey-specific coursework; a minimum of four years of experience in both the field and office; and passing the Fundamentals of Surveying, Principals of Surveying, and state-specific exams.

Since earning my license, I have enjoyed many more years of land surveying experience and enrolled in a master's degree program in surveying and business online. Surveyors are also required to complete continuing education that meets the minimum standards required by state boards, which I usually exceed doubly.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I begin by conversing with the client to better understand the exact scope of work they need, be it merely locating existing corners on the ground or producing a full boundary survey plat and updated legal description. I don't mean to charge my clients for more work than they need but I do want to provide a "turn-key" hastle-free survey service. I also lookup the subject property on the local tax assessor's GIS to better understand the property's approximate boundary, whether it has been surveyed before, how it is described, and its current condition (wooded, developed, cleared, etc.). From there I can advise my client about how best to proceed and provide a fee for my services.
